Join Us As a Volunteer

Halliwick Penguins Swimming Club is run on an entirely voluntary basis and  has been teaching swimming to people of all ages with disabilities in Enfield, Southgate and the surrounding areas for over 70 years.

We are affiliated to the Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy (Halliwick AST) and teach swimming and water safety using the Halliwick Concept.

All of our swimmers have a disability and both swimmers and volunteers must be members of the club. The club is run entirely by volunteers and we are always looking for more volunteers to help.

We are a friendly and supportive club. We do a lot of one-to-one work and group activity in the water but also have swimmers that can swim independently, some of them entering competitions.

Where appropriate, we work on a one-to-one basis so that each swimmer has a helper/instructor with them until they have reached a certain level of proficiency. We have a badge system, (red, yellow, green and blue badges) and when a green badge is gained we consider the swimmer to be safe enough to swim independently.

If you would like to work with us, we would give ‘in-club’ training and you would work with an experienced Instructor who will show you how things are done. We teach a lot of water safety measures; our initial aim is to encourage water happiness and water safety – swimming is the bonus!

Anyone can volunteer and you don’t have to be a proficient swimmer; just an interest in swimming and helping is needed. The club can teach you all you need to know.

Anyone who has an interest in volunteering is encouraged to join. You could be undertaking your Duke of Edinburgh Award, want a new challenge or simply have a couple of hours spare to help out. You could:

  • Help support our swimmers in the water: You will work with an experienced instructor at first and discover how to help swimmers gain confidence in the water and learn to swim.
  • Help with administrative tasks: Even if you don’t want to help in the water, there is lots you could do, for example, helping to maintain our membership records, organising events and so on.
